The History and Purpose of the Club
In August of 1992, a sister school
relationship began between Mayville Middle School and Hikari Junior
High School in the Chiba Prefecture of Japan. Every year since
then, Japanese visitors have come to Mayville to learn about the
American way of life. In return, Mayville Middle School students
and staff gain knowledge of Japanese culture by visiting Hikari
bi-annually. The first trip occurred in the spring of 2000, with
additional trips following to date.
These exchanges have not only benefited
the students and teachers involved, but have been a true educational
experience for host students and their families.
As an outcome of the exchange program
and the desire of our students to learn more about Japan, the
Japan Club was formed. The club’s purpose is for learning
about the culture of the country and support our sister-school
relationship with Hikari Junior High.
